What's New at This Web Site?
This website has undergone major revisions, including:
- Relocation to its own domain, www.mscn.org
- Addition of a real-time interactive bulletin board (The Water Cooler), powered by The Ultimate Bulletin Board
- Transition of existing Ask the Career Coach messages to UBB format; this will enable much more rapid and regular updating in the future.
- Expanded Career Information Links, including links to books with reviews by The Career Coach; books can be ordered directly from Amazon.com.
- Expanded Military Family Living Links, including links to books with reviews by The Career Coach; books can be ordered directly from Amazon.com
- Although no new references have been added to The Library at this time, it was cleaned up and instructions for executing a search were included.
- Several articles were updated to reflect new information. Highlights of upcoming additions are included.
15 October 1999:
7 November 1999:
2 January 2000:
- Set Re-Direct Link from old location of the MSCN website (w3.nai.net/~military), which will be permanently deactived when referrals decline.
24 January 2000:
- Correspondence to Ask The Career Coach and responses were added.
- Interested in what The Career Coach had to say about the January 12, 2000 editorial in The Washington Post, "Our GIs Earn Enough"? Read the response she sent to the Washingon Post.
- A previous editorial published in The Navy Times regarding the Military Spouse Entrepreneurial Readiness Program has also been uploaded to the website, along with corresponding remarks from Rhonda Mollenkopf, a successful MSERP "graduate"
18 June 2000:
- "Information For Employers," including "The Employer's Advantage: Tap the Resource" was added.
- Several articles were updated based on recent guidance.
30 August 2000:
- "Ask The Career Coach" was updated with recent letters to the Career Coach. Letters on similar topics were organized together, and some information was updated based on new guidance. The policy on responses was changed, and should help to increase the benefit of this service to website visitors.
13 September 2000:
- New Career Information and Military Family Living links were added. Dead links were removed.
- Links were modified to open in a separate browser window, eliminating the need to step "back" through several layers to return to the links launch page.
15 September 2000:
- The Water Cooler Bulletin Board

- The Bulletin Board was upgraded to provide increased functionality and improved aesthetics. The "survey" and "opinions" forums were eliminated (due to lack of interest), and new forums on "News You Can Use" and "Legislative/Policy Alerts" were added. Initial posts on current legislative activity regarding unemployment compensation for military spouses was posted. Additionally, the Working Group Status board was reconfigured to make it an open forum, so that all spouses can see what the Working Groups are doing, which should increase participation (and eliminate those frustrating access problems for participants!)
18 September 2000:
- The website was reformatted employing "frames." This should accelerate downloading time, by eliminating the need for the menu to re-draw itself each time a visitor selects an option.
- Legislative and Industry News: In February 2000, the State of Washington passed legislation to allow military spouses to collect unemployment benefits upon PCSing. Details on this and pending legislation in Kentucky, Georgia and Michigan, as well as efforts to initiate similar legislation in Wisconsin will be outlined in an upcoming article.
- "Official" Programs: The Career Coach is completing an analysis of statistics provided by DoD on "Military Spouse Preference." Just how beneficial is "spouse preference" and how effectively is this Congressional mandate being implemented?
Planned Enhancements:
- Reformatting to comply with HTML 4.0.

- This will be accomplished incrementally as pages are updated. HTML 4.0 will make it easier for visitors using text-to-speech and other unconventional browsers, and enable simultaneous optimization for both screen and print viewing. The updated HTML standard, however, requires visitors to upgrade to the latest versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. The Webmaster has been monitoring visitors' browsers and determined that over 90% of visitors have already upgraded; for those who have not, links for free downloads will be included.
